Comments: Instead of using proprietary 3rd-party VSTis, this live recording uses synthesis in MaxMSP alone. MIDI events were generated by me in Deviate, then sent via network to Alex — who has built a whole lot of neat synths and effects — and the resulting audio was captured as separate streams.

Swung or straight

Using the elastic~ object for real-time time-stretching, it’s possible to add or take away what is commonly known as ’swing’ from a piece of popular music.

Comments: Nothing too ground-breaking here — standard dense synth parts and percussion. Regeneration tends to go a bit downhill after about halfway.

Comments: Another MIDI-gating piece (similar to nanoke) but instead of using radio static and vinyl scratches, the underlying audio consists of drum loops that have been tempo-matched to that of recording. The effect is quite interesting as the MIDI events that are triggered will result in different (though percussive) sounds on most iterations (except for when the underlying audio is silent). Pattern restarting (3+3+2) is used for most of this recording, but because of the varying audio it’s not particularly apparent. One percussive and one melodic track are synthesised, but the rest are audio, including a continuous background sample.

Comments: A quick semi-model of Plaid’s snakeing (Tekkonkinkreet soundtrack) using swing, acoustic drum samples and a slow BPM (62). No Dexter used here so interaction is pretty sparse, but the drum fill about a third of the way in is pretty good. Yes, the drummer has more than two hands.

Comments: Continuing on with unusual timing, this is in 13/8. Lots of lush, fairly ‘commercial’-sounding synths and percussion. Two melodic voices were used to trigger the lead bass synth, which explains the substantial pitch variation. Not particularly dynamic, however.

Comments: This is an attempt at recording something much more mainstream. A few days ago I saw Clark (and some other artists) play live, and noticed how minimal much of the content was, focusing mostly on percussion and a simple bassline. The use of slightly swung timing in many these live works was another interesting feature, and has been incorporated here.
