Filename: spastoc_deviate_ds_Jan09
Duration: 3:19
Recorded: 28 January 2009
Instruments: 4 synths, percussion
Comments: This was an experiment with less metrical output, which proved to be quite difficult to control (hence the repetitiveness and stagnation throughout). Two enduring issues include the difference in sound on headphones and loudspeakers, and the considerable time needed to choose suitable VST instrument sounds.

User-created Songsmith videos

January 22nd, 2009

There is a lot that has been said about Microsoft’s ‘Songsmith’ software – or, to be specific, the promotional video that’s currently doing the rounds.

The idea of extracting key from a monophonic pitch sequence is interesting, but extrapolating chords from the determined key seems to be a little tricky. Here are some interesting examples provided by Songsmith users in the past week or so.

The Police: ‘Roxanne’

Van Halen: ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’

Metallica: ‘Enter Sandman’

Oasis: ‘Wonderwall’

Marvin Gaye: ‘What’s Goin’ On’

The Beastie Boys: ‘Intergalactic’

Notorious B. I. G.: ‘Dead Wrong’

The Doobie Brothers: ‘Long Train Runnin”

…and many more.

New Deviate recordings – January 2009

January 19th, 2009

5 recordings of various lengths exploring some new things: time signature scaling, automatic cutoff variation on drum output, electro sound sets, and live takes with vocal acapellas.

Filename: sevenths_deviate_ds_Jan09
Duration: 1:27
Recorded: 17 January 2009
Instruments: drums, 4 synths
Comments: A fairly bland example apart from the time signature change at 00:36 from 8/8 to 7/8. The timing data (output as integers from 1-32) is scaled so that rhythmic emphasis is maintained in the new time signature – ie. instead of numbers 1-28 being output sequentially (totaling 7 beats), 28 values between 1 and 32 are output, keeping the rhythmically important beats and discarding less important ones. Many thanks to Alex for this idea!

Filename: james_deviate_ds_Jan09
Duration: 1:48
Recorded: 18 January 2009
Instruments: drums, 4 synths
Comments: Some cutoff variation and part activation. Drum cutoffs are varying automatically. Quite an interesting selection of VST instruments. A single off note occurs at 1:32.

Filename: cleanelec_deviate_ds_Jan09
Duration: 1:16
Recorded: 19 January 2009
Instruments: drums
Comments: This was a completely automated recording with no user interference. It shows 28 bars of drum output with automatic cutoff variation. This feature aims to suggest higher-level meter to the listener by, in a nutshell, changing cutoff variables on every 4th bar (and sometimes other bars as well). The sounds are from a new “electro” soundset constructed in Kontakt.

Filename: 4nsicthigd_deviate_d_Jan09
Duration: 4:03
Recorded: 19 January 2009
Instruments: drums, audio sample
Comments: *** This mp3 contains EXPLICIT CONTENT *** An attempt at providing live drum accompaniment to a rap acappella sample, which has been used in its original form (no editing/effects added). This was done without having listened to the sample beforehand. In retrospect, the content should have been a little more sparse.

Filename: 4nsicbars_deviate_d_Jan09
Duration: 4:13
Recorded: 19 January 2009
Instruments: drums, 2 synths, audio sample
Comments: **** This mp3 contains EXPLICIT CONTENT *** Another live accompaniment, as above, this time with limited synths as well as drums. Drum content is a little more sparse and straightforward. The cut-out of drum and synths at 3:02 was actually due to an OS freeze (high CPU usage).

Filename: quad_deviate_ds_Oct08

Filename: pizzfest_deviate_s_Oct08
Duration: 5:22
Recorded: 5 October 2008
Instruments: 4 synths
Comments: A lighthearted take using synthesised strings; the main goal here was to continually regenerate score data to test the ‘robustness’ of the timescores/tonescores used. Overall, output was satisfactory, apart from some  slightly off notes at 1:29 and 3:57.

Deviate excerpts: October – December 2008

January 7th, 2009

The following mp3s are short excerpts (0:30 – 1:39) of musical output from Deviate, a generative music performance environment constructed in MaxMSP.

Output is generated as MIDI messages which are routed to a host application (Cubase). This application hosts various synthesiser/sampler VST plug-ins, and can also be used to record incoming MIDI events.

These mp3s are short extracts from live recordings and have not been edited or altered. All MIDI content is generated within Deviate/MaxMSP. Individual notes are indeterminate; the user specifies parameters such as arrangement, density, and transposition.
